Reiki

a

Reiki is a Japanese word meaning "universal life energy."  It is a complementary, holistic, natural, non-invasive energy form of healing, where the practitioner serves as an open channel for transmitting energy to others. This transference of energy helps break up negative energy and replaces it with positive, healing energy, which passes through the hands of the practitioner to the patient and activates the patient's own natural ability to heal itself.

a

Reiki is based on the fact that energy flows through living organisms, if it be from a fruit, to a tree, to a human being.  As Einstein put it e=mc2. Energy equals matter multiplied by the speed of light squared. This energy is typically referred to as "life force energy" or ki which is all around us. Rei means "universal," or present everywhere.

Dr. Mikao Usui

Many cultures, past and present have shared the belief in this unseen force and in the interconnectedness of all life. One is more vulnerable to stress and illness when reserves of life energy are low.

Reiki is believed to have begun in Tibet several thousand years ago. Seers in the Orient studied energies and developed a system of sounds and symbols for universal healing energies. Various healing systems, which crossed many different cultures, emerged from this single root system. Unfortunately, the original source itself was forgotten.

In 1892 at the holy Mount Kurama near Kyoto, the Japanese Dr. Mikao Usui received through 21 days of meditation and fasting the gift of Reiki. He founded the Usui Ryoho Gakkai and initiated various students into Reiki Masters, most of them came from the Japanese Armed Forces, among them his successor Dr. Chujiro Hayashi.

a

Dr. Mikao rediscovered the root system and called this new form, of sounds and symbols of healing, Reiki and taught it throughout Japan until his death.

a

He did an extensive 21 year study of Reiki and also studied ancient sutras (Buddhist teachings written in Sanskrit). He discovered ancient sounds and symbols that are linked directly to the human body and nervous system which activate the universal life energy for healing.

a

The tradition was passed through several grandmasters of Reiki such as Dr. Chujiro Hyashi, Hawayo Takata, and Phyllis Lei Furumoto.  The Usui System of Natural Healing balances and strengthens the body's energy, promoting its ability to heal itself.

Reiki was introduced to the Western world in the mid-1970s. Since then its use has spread dramatically worldwide. In some hospitals now have Reiki practitioners helping patients with Cancer and AIDS.
